The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay instantly became enthralled after showing her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be an avenue for action. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama.
